We had planned a two week trip to Hawaii, but Covid hit, which allowed us to work remotely, so we ended up staying a year! During the pandemic, Hawaii instituted a mandatory two week quarantine for anyone flying in, which meant that no tourists came and after quarantining ourselves in a small apartment in Honolulu we had the whole place to ourselves! During our quarantine Breeny dropped off food for us since we weren't even allowed to leave to get groceries.

We had been wanted to hike the Kalalau Trial on Kauai for a long time but it usually requires booking a permit months ahead of time. Given the lack of tourists, we were able to get a spot on just a weeks notice. It was a taxing hike up and down canyons, through lots of streams, and over a couple of very narrow cliffs, but in the end we made it and camped on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Over the next year, we did lots of hiking to explore Oahu and took advantage of finally being near Breeny, Ted, Henry, Blake, and Russell for an extended period by spending time with them frequently.

We lived at Turtle Bay on the north shore for a few months and later moved to Kailua.

When we finally returned home after a year, our neighbors didn't recognize me due to my hair having grown out and we had weeds in our yard that were six feet tall!
