Capitol Reef is a reef has nothing to do with the ocean or coral. Instead, it's called a reef because it's a physical barrier,
a massive rock ridge stretching for miles, and the there is a rock dome in one spot that looks similar to the capitol building, hence Capitol Reef.
It's not possible to capture the magnificence of it in photos. The sheer scale of the formation along with the varied layers that tell a tumultuous 65 million year tale. It's one of the least visited national parks because it's so remote, but it was well worth our visit.
In one of the few spots where there is a slot canyon that allows crossing the reef, there are both petroglyphs from 300-1300 and names of Mormon pioneers from the 1800s.
