In the early days of the town of Coos Bay, there were no good roads or rail and travel within the down was by water using small boats they coined as the Mosquito Fleet.

Coos Bay was a big producer of timber, especially once the "steam donkey" was invented to pull logs out of the forest.

North of Coos Bay is a sand dunes national recreation area. It felt quite unexpected to transition so quickly from rocky cliff shoreline to sand beaches.
