The eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains is much steeper and also less traveled due to most of the population centers being on the west side. For virtually the entire length of the range the mountains rise dramatically out of a flatland and tower over it.

I visited the Alabama Hills conservation area which features lots of interested rock formations including Mobius Arch, which happens to perfectly frame Mount Whitney when you look westward through it. Mount Whitney is the highest point in the 48 contiguous states, ironically just 85 miles from Badwater Basin in Death Valley, which is the lowest point.
