Route 50, running through the heart of Nevada is one of the least inhabited areas of the US, hence the nickname "The World's Loneliest Road". I got to see in-situ Ichthyosaur fossils, mining ghost towns, a cave full of petroglyphs, the only glacier in Nevada, massive charcoal ovens, and the 40-mile dessert that pioneers attempting to reach California had to cross. Great Basin National Park is the darkest place in the US, but unfortunately it was a full moon, so I didn't see many stars.
