El Calafate Photos

The face of the Perito Moreno glacier towers 60m above the water, measures 30km long, and is one of the few glaciers in the world that isn't receding It is just a small part of the Patagonia Ice Cap, which, in total, is the fourth largest body of frozen water in the world after the polar ice caps and Greenland. Perito Moreno is also famous for being an extremely active glacier with large chunks breaking off every day. The entire time I was there, there were small pieces coming off every couple of minutes. For something that is ostensibly so static, it is actually quite dynamic and exciting. Everyone standing on the balconies overlooking the glacier was constantly on edge, wondering when the next piece would break off and how big it would be. Unfortunately we were there on a very cloudy day, so that pictures don't look very impressive. It was also very difficult to capture the enormous scale of the glacier in photos.
