Flam Photos

I had a hard time deciding where to go from Bergen. I tried to sign up for several different tours and cruises, but they were all booked, so I ended up taking a bus to Flam. Flam sits at the end of Aurlandfjord, which is a narrow branch of Sognefjord, the largest fjord of them all. I actually prefer the narrower fjords because they have a more exaggerated feel.

I arrived in Flam without a place to stay because I had decided to come at the last minute. Luckily, the hostel had vacant beds, or so they said. They assigned me to a four bed room, but there were no keys left for it, which was odd. They dug up a spare key for me, but when I went inside, it wasn't clear, but it looked like there might already be four people's things in the room, which would explain why all the keys were gone. I knew the hostel reception desk closed at 10PM and I would be gone until after that, so I didn't want to wait and see if four other people showed up later, leaving me without a bed. I went back to reception and they finally assigned me to a new room, this one with nobody else in it.

I headed out on a five hour hike that night and oh boy was it worth it, spectacular views throughout. On all the fjord hikes I did in Norway, there were hardly and people on the trail. I only say one or two a day. I guess everyone else is in town buying trinkets. At the end of the hike, once again, were sheep. Maybe there's some road nearby that I don't know about, but if not, I don't understand who raises these animals. There were a couple of small buildings up there too, so possibly someone lives there. I can't imagine walking to get groceries.
