Kaikoura sports a beautiful pebble beach, sperm whales, dolphins, and tons of seals. I walked along a trail to the end of a peninsula that was supposedly the seventh best hike in New Zealand. I have a hard time believing it ranks that highly, but it was quite nice. I was taking pictures of a seal swimming in the water and it started swimming toward me. When it reached the shore it jumped out, opened its mouth wide, showed its teeth, barked, and nearly swallowed my camera in the process. When I jumped backwards, it stopped and plopped down to sun itself in the spot I'd been standing.
