Since I would call Jakarta a landfill before I would call it a city, I didn't feel like spending any more time there than I had to. I decided to head to Malaysia instead, which made sense since it was on the way to Thailand. Kuala Lumpur, or KL as the locals call it, was a breath of fresh air after Jakarta. There were actually sidewalks in most places! KL has a lot of modern buildings of intesting shapes and architectures.
I wanted to get out of the city and I had been told that the Perhentian Islands were nice, so I planned to head there. I got to the bus station and found out that the bus to Perhentians was an overnight bus, which I wasn't up for. I looked at the timetable and chose a destination almost at random, Pulau Penang. I knew that Pulau meant that it was an island and it must have a nice beach, right? I just wanted to hang low for awhile. I didn't realize how low.
