I hiked with a group of friends I made from my bus to the end of a peninsula overlooking a bay on the very northernmost tip of the south island. The trail led up a mountain and then down the other side to reach the end of the peninsula, but the view was actually best from the top of the mountain. There were lots of boats enjoying the pristine water, including the ferry boats going between the north and south islands.

It's strange how I find pockets of travelers from a particular country in various regions of the world. In Europe, it was all Americans and Australians. Asia was dominated by Brits. And New Zealand, and supposedly Australia as well, has been invaded by Germans. There seem to be more Germans in New Zealand than Kiwis.
